2011-12 PowerXpress Rotation Descriptions for Grades 1-6:

Unit 1: Living as Caretakers
Bible Story Reference: 1:1-2:2:4, 15
Bible Verse: Be responsible for fish in the sea and birds in the air, for every living thing that moves on the earth. (Genesis 1:28b)
Main Idea: All that we are and all that we have comes to us as a gift from God. God calls us to care for all of creation by caring for ourselves, for to others, and for the natural world.  By learning how to use our money, time, and talents to serve God, we fulfill our call to care for creation.
Objectives: Children will hear the story of Creation from Genesis; hear that God gave people the responsibility of caring for creation in the story from Genesis; explore the concept of stewardship, and discover how to act as a steward or caretaker of God's creation; discover how to be better caretakers of God's creation by working together with others; discover ways to use their creativity, their talents, their money, and their time to serve God by caring for others, for the natural world, and for themselves.
Special event: God made us Special Lock-in September 24-25

Unit 2: Feast and Festivals
Bible Story Reference: Ecclesiastes 3:1
Bible Verse: For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven (Ecclesiastes 3:1)
Main Idea: Jewish special days help us understand how Jesus lived and remember what God has done. We can remember all that God has done and give thanks.
Objectives: Children will explore and gain an appreciation of special days celebrated by the Hebrews: Rosh Hashanah; Yom Kippur; Sukkot; Hanukkah; Passover; and the Sabbath.
Special event: Feast & Festivals Event, October 30, wear your Halloween costume

Unit 3: Christmas Unit
During this unit the students learn about the Christmas story, the parts of a worship service, and practice for the Children's Christmas service which is led by the students.  Students in Pre-Kindergarten through high school participate in the service. Students lead the call to worship, prayers, collect the offering, the junior choir sings the anthem and sermon will be a skit based on the book Santa's Favorite Story; Santa in the woods with the forest animals telling them his favorite story…the nativity story.
Special event: Church   School Christmas Service, December 18

 

Unit 4: Jesus in the Temple:

Bible Story Reference: Luke 2:41-52
Bible Verse: He said to them, "Why were you searching for me? Did you not know that I must be in my Father's house? (Luke 2:49)
Main Idea: God's "house" is a comfortable place to learn, ask questions, and discover God's plans for us.
Objectives :Children will: explore the Bible story of Jesus in the Temple; make connections with the ways young people learn the faith today; discover some of the traditions that helped people connect with God that Jesus would have learned as a boy; learn about the temple.
Special event: Hometown Nazareth Market Place, Where Jesus was a kid, February 12

 

Unit 5: Mary Magdalene's Story
Mary was the first to hear the good news of Jesus' resurrection.  She was afraid and found it hard to believe that Jesus was really alive.  But when she saw Jesus herself, she ran to tell the others.  Like Mary, we too can tell others the good news of Jesus. 

 

Bible Story Reference: Mark 16:1-11
Bible Verse: Do not be alarmed; ... He [Jesus] has been raised; he is not here. (Mark 16:6)
