 Suggested Fellowship Hour Refreshments
Note to preparers:
The hope is to prepare a variety refreshments that accommodate the needs of our congregation, old and young. This will make our offering more "brunch like".  In this way, we'll really provide a meaningful ministry to those who may be eating this as their only meal of the day, to young families who may otherwise not attend because they have to get some nutrition into the kids before getting them to their games, and to the rest of us that really will be healthier for the experience.   Please, refer to the following guidelines in making your choices.
THINGS TO CONSIDER BRINGING:
  1. Have low fat options available like fruit, baby carrots and/or other veggies.   Have protein like cheese and crackers, sandwiches (label type) quartered (NO PEANUT BUTTER), small yogurts.  Folks are loving the cheese and crackers!
  2. Baked goods, although not usually low fat, still provide lots of good vitamins when they are made with bananas, pumpkin, apple, eggs, milk etc.  There are, however, lower fat baked goods if you enjoy making yeast breads, that you could offer with any assortment of toppings that you like.  (NO NUTS, PLEASE)
  3. Breakfast casseroles, or quiche (mini or regular) are a wonderful idea, as well, but, only if you really love to cook.  The ovens are available for use.  Just remember to provide plates, and utensils (paper/plastic if you don't want to wash or glass if you don't mind running the dishwasher).  Instructions are available on the wall behind the dishwasher.  Do not dry dishes after going through the washer because if puts bacteria back onto them (board of health rule).
  4. Sweets are fine, too.  Just try to make them 25% or less of the things you offer.
  5. Consider some soy and/or milk free foods ( rice krispy treats made w/oil, soy yogurt)
THINGS NOT TO BRING:
Anything containing NUTS, ESPECIALLY PEANUTS.  Read your packages, if you're buying foods, for ingredients like "peanut oil"  It may be difficult to find chocolate that is not tainted, but most people who are allergic know to stay away from chocolate.  Save your labels from purchased foods so that parents can look over ingredients, if they choose, before giving their little ones snacks.  Please, TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY.   WE HAVE SEVERAL CHILDREN WHO COULD DIE from eating trace amounts of tree nut and/or peanut products.  Even smelling them could trigger a reaction.  Just don't bring nuts, peanuts or peanut butter into the building.
Anything containing uncooked alcohol.  We want to respect folks who struggle daily with addictions.  Lets give them one place they don't have to worry about accidental ingestion.
Do only what feels best for you with baking or buying.  A big stressor is not good ministry for you!
THANK YOU FOR YOUR WORK TOWARD THIS VITAL MINISTRY!!
